  5. iPhones and Alternatives (Time Magazine)
"The new iPhone 3G should please everyone. Its look and feel are only slightly improved, but a faster network loads Web pages more quickly, true GPS functionality allows it to easily find places nearby, and the new $199 price (down from $400) makes it an affordable luxury."

"Before deciding whether to buy, however, make sure you can actually take advantage of the iPhone 3G's high-speed data network."

"Personally, I'm holding out for the new handsets that will run on Google's Android operating system due out later this year. Android phones will be carrier agnostic, so I won't be shackled to the AT&T network, and the phone's add-on apps are likely to be less expensive (and possibly even free). That's the promise, anyway. I'll know for sure once I get my hands on one." 07-08

  6. -Alternatives to $700 Billion Bailout (NakedCapitalism.com)
"The first problem is resolved by removing the deposits insurance cap and support for money market funds -- now done."

"The second [problem] is to restore interbank lending by introducing now the interest on gross reserves (Bernanke has already requested this) and unifying the discount and Funds rate to have the Fed become guarantor of the market."

"To restore short term lending to business, restore real bills lending at the discount window, increase the insurance fund to allow FDIC to agressively resolve troubled insolvent banks, rather than fixing troubled assets."

"This should prevent the meltdown that Paulson is worried about." 09-08

  7. Verizon Alternatives: HTC Incredible vs. Motorola Droid X (PhoneArena.com)
"Between the two, we prefer the display on the Motorola DROID X, due to its larger size, accurate colors, excellent resolution, and usability in sunlight."

" We ran the Quadrant benchmark program on both, which tests the CPU, memory, I/O, 2D and 3D graphics, and got a score of 1263 on the DROID X, while the Droid Incredible got a significantly lower score of 523." 08-10

  8. Geoengineering Alternatives (IPSNews.net)
"The geoengineering proposals include installing giant vertical pipes in the ocean to bring cold water to the surface, pumping vast amounts of sulphates into the stratosphere to block sunlight, or blowing ocean salt spray into clouds to increase their reflectivity."

"Broadly speaking, there are two main geoengineering approaches: solar radiation management and carbon sequestration, in other words, absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to reduce the concentration of this greenhouse-effect gas."

  9. iPad Alternatives (HuffingtonPost.com)
"We've assembled a guide to a dozen iPad alternatives. Some of these tablet PCs have been released, while some are only rumored to be in the works, but all of these Android, webOS, and Windows-based slates are worth a look." 12-10

  14. Fueling War - Oil, War, and Global Warming (CommonDreams.org - San Francisco Chronicle, Martinez and Karliner)
"The United States and the rest of the world would be much better off if we cracked down on corporate criminals, while taking the billions of dollars we're set to spend on war and investing them in kicking the oil habit and transforming our energy systems into environmentally sound alternatives." 11-02

  15. Energy and Oil: Kerry (Issue2000.org)
"I support updating CAFE standards to 36 miles per gallon by 2015. This proposal will reduce America's dependence on oil by saving 2 million barrels of oil per day -- almost as much as we currently import from the Persian Gulf. It will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, smog and ozone pollution."

"We have to encourage the use of hybrid vehicles and invest in research and development. We have to set a goal by 2020 that 20 percent of our energy will come from renewable fuels. I am going to create an energy efficient trust fund to look for news sources of energy and we are going to create tens of thousands of jobs doing that. We can't drill our way out of this."

"We only have 3% of the world's oil reserves. There is no physical way for the US to drill its way out of this problem. We have to invent our way out of this problem. The sooner that we commit America to the science & discovery of renewable alternatives, the better off America will be, the better our health will be, the more effective our economy would be, the better our national security will be, and the better world citizen we will be. We need to commit ourselves to energy independence now." 2-04

  16. Bush Remarks on Intelligent Design (Washington Post)
"President Bush invigorated proponents of teaching alternatives to evolution in public schools with remarks saying that schoolchildren should be taught about 'intelligent design,' a view of creation that challenges established scientific thinking and promotes the idea that an unseen force is behind the development of humanity."

"Bush's comments were 'irresponsible,' said Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State. He said the president, by suggesting that students hear two viewpoints, 'doesn't understand that one is a religious viewpoint and one is a scientific viewpoint.' " 8-05

  17. -12-03-05 Congressional Research Service: EPA Slants Findings (Bloomberg.com)
"A Bush administration analysis of air pollution legislation uses assumptions that boost the benefits of its own proposal while overstating the costs of alternatives, according to a report by the Congressional Research Service."

"For example, the EPA assumes the availability of boilermaker labor for installing pollution-control equipment will be limited until 2010. Such a labor shortage would affect only the Carper and Jeffords proposals, which seek steeper emissions cuts sooner."

"Lacking the ability to install pollution controls, coal- fired generators would be forced to shut down in the EPA analysis of Jeffords's proposal. In addition, natural gas-fired and renewable fuel generators would be required at a high cost, the report found."

"Such a labor shortage has been questioned by some, including the Institute of Clean Air Companies, the trade association that represents the air pollution-control industry, the report said." 12-05

  18. Sequestering CO2 (National Resources Defense Council)
"Coal-fired power plants are the single largest source of man-made CO2, accounting for one quarter to one third of the world's total."

"We now stand at a watershed moment. An entire generation of obsolete coal-fired power plants built in the 1950s and 1960s needs to be replaced, and U.S. utility companies have announced their intention of building more than 100 new coal plants over the next 10 to 15 years. Unless something happens soon to tilt the balance toward more environmentally benign alternatives, nearly all of those power plants will use the old-fashioned, intrinsically dirty technology known as pulverized coal."

"Coal fuels 90 percent of China's electricity demand. That demand is increasing so rapidly that China expects to expand its generating capacity over the next 30 years by 300,000 MW, or almost half of America's current consumption. As matters now stand, nearly all of China's projected new capacity will use standard pulverized coal technology." 12-05

  19. Cooking Without Teflon or Much Oil (New York Times)
"DuPont, the manufacturer of Teflon, says that its pans are safe and that their surfaces won't decompose, possibly releasing the gas, until the pan's temperature reaches 680 degrees. Some scientists say that an empty pan left on a burner set on high reaches 700 degrees in as little as three minutes." The author rejected the "non-stick" pans and looked for alternatives. "The most important characteristic was how close the pans came to having the nonstick qualities people love about Teflon. Can they sauté and brown, even without oil? Almost as important, how easy are they to clean?"

"After all the tests, there was one pan I fell for: Le Creuset. It is easy to clean, and because of its enamel finish, acidic foods can be cooked without changes to color or taste. The cast iron pans were a very close second." 9-05

  20. 01-15-07 Clinton's Global Initiative Pledges $4 Billion for Rnewable Energy (TreeHugger.com)
"The total of 4 billion in Clinton Initiative commitments is on the same plane as the US Federal Government’s collective budgetary allocation for research into mostly coal and nuclear energy alternatives, as was also announced this week (huge pdf file at link). Besides the focus on renewability, what most distinguishes the Clinton commitment from the US Department of Energy's plan is the phrase 'while getting returns on capital invested.' The Green Fund is seeding not merely money but a philosophy of pragmatism and near-term outcomes." 01-07
